Week 18 (30th January 2007) Firstly this week a big "well done boys" to the Interleague team who last Monday in a packed Withington Bowling Club beat Preston 4-3 who are feared by most as pre Tournament favourites…...arguably that is..! Leaders Flixton Con's relentless push for success saw them beat one of the top teams Mens A 5-2 and compound them to 5th place, fluent breaks from Interleaguers Paul Keeling 58 and Barry Carmody 49, (3rd & 2nd in the Stats) saw them go 4 points clear. They will take some stopping now, as it seems they are back in the flow. However, Urmston Cons A (2nd) had a tricky away match at Brooklands (6th) and just scraped a 4-3 win on those dark woolly tables, and with a mouth-watering clash ahead this week at Flixton Cons A it was important to keep in touch. Neither Flixton or Urmston were available for comment ahead of this weeks game as they are practising! Woodheys (3rd) are back in the groove with a solid 6-1 away victory at Flixton Cons C (9th), and entertain Timperley this week which should be a tester! And yes, just like in the pantomimes, "he's behind you" Starkie and his men are sniffing & scratching around up there again, Timperley Cons (4th) are beginning to look menacing, with a 7-0 whitewash of my beloved Excel (8th), although lucky in a couple, an impressive Dereck Manion saw off Sale's top man with breaks of 31 & 22, (revenge is sweet re: Doubles me thinks!). Despite being 12 points off the pace, all the teams above Timperley have to miss a week (thanx again Services), it should be interesting? Bottom side Stretford Cons B, with relegation now a reality, were thrashed 7-0 by a buoyant Flixton Cons B (10th). In Division 2, Top of the table side Flixton Exes A, were lead by someone clearly not playing to his handicap, Steve Urbaniak knocked in breaks of 42 & 22 and helped them to a 6-1 win over Mens C. In 2nd Rail A kept the pressure on with a solid 6-1 win also. Elsewhere, breaks from S Flitcroft - Flixton Exes B (30) & Bob Stapley (23) Urmston Social A, lit up the Second Division. See the Hitmen list, keep practising guys….! Week 17 (23rd January 2007) Despite Flixton Con's recent stumble, they made hard work of a home 5-2 win against Stretford Cons A (who just cling on to 6th place), and remain 3 points clear. Urmston Cons A (2nd) had the hardest game of the week against close rivals Mens A (3rd), in a tight match tied at 2-2 they came out on top after Murray & Miller beat Unsworth & Shelmerdine respectively to take match & aggregate 5-2. Timperley Cons had the week off still shaking from their result last week and dropped to 5th. And it was Woodheys A (4th) who capitalised, but only just, they made hard work of a 4-3 victory at home to a much improved Flixton Cons B (11th). Brooklands (7th) enjoyed a solid 5-2 win at Mens B (10th). Sale Excels (8th) remarkable form continues, 5 straight league wins saw them beat Flixton Cons C 4-3 in a tight match, however with some monsters around the corner I guess things will change soon. This coming week will see the impressive Mens A host top dogs Flixton, with a Mens victory it could throw the top wide open. In Division 2, Top of the table side Flixton Exes A extended their lead to 5 points with a tight 4-3 win, Woodheys B (3rd) lost 4-3 which let Rail A sneak into 2nd. No breaks in either division to report for the Hitmen list, keep practising guys….! Monday 29th sees the Interleague team kick off with a tricky match against Preston at Whithington Bowling Club (31A, Derby Road, Fallowfield) Come down and have a watch…! Take a look at the talent, we might not have many Brad Pitts in our squad, however there are some lovely pictures….! Week 16 (16th January 2007) "The Chosen Ones" came to the end of a truly superb run, Flixton Cons A surrendered a 14 game unbeaten run at the hands of Timperley Cons (4th) but still remain top. Steve Ennis knocked in a fluent 45 to help them. On reflection the 5-2 loss to former champions may strengthen their resolve, or maybe they need to re-introduce the talented Leadbetter more often or the ubiquitous Peckie. Breathing down their necks in 2nd, Urmston Cons A cut the gap to just 3 Pts with an impressive 6-1 away win at the Jeckly & Hyde side Stretford Cons A (6th) led by a Jonny Hawken 42. Mens A (3rd) kept up with the pace with an excellent 5-2 victory against a tricky Brooklands (7th) which included a Sullivan 35. Woodheys (5th) cemented their place and stole all the points as they white-washed Urmston Cons B (12th) away. Sale Excel (8th) enjoyed their 4th straight league win (is that a record) with a 5-2 away win at Flixton Cons B (11th). Mens B (10th) thrashed bottom side Stretford Cons B 7-0. In Division 2, Top of the table side Flixton Exes A extended thier lead to 4 points with an impressive 6-1 thrashing of Bob Stapleys Urmston Social A, while 2nd & 3rd played each other with Woodheys B just edging Rail A it 4-3. Rail B issued a bandit alert with breaks from Tony Green 61 & Mr Lewis 60, well done to them both, they slip into the top 6 of the Hitmen list, well impressive….! |
